The fight against cancer has taken on a personal demeanor as my goal has focused on fundraising to FIND A CURE for Prostate Cancer.  This fight is not just mine, nor is it only for men.  It’s also for the women who love them.  It’s a fight for our daughters, sisters, nieces, aunts, mothers, grandmothers and wives.  It’s a fight for the relationships we have as family, with friends, with partners and as colleagues.  It’s a fight to FIND A CURE, to support the many roles men play in the fabric of all of our lives.  Everyone is touched by Prostate Cancer in some fashion.  Once thought to be a disease of elderly men that no one ever dies from, Prostate Cancer is now commonly affecting men in their forties with significant morbidity and shortening of life expectancy.  The fight against Prostate Cancer is something we should all be invested in.

A couple facts you should know:

  • Prostate Cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America affecting 1 in 6 men (15% of these are highly aggressive forms leading to metastasis and death).
  • Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men (after lung cancer).
  • Incidence rates have doubled in the last 20 years.
  • Funding for Prostate Cancer is on the low-end of the spectrum for cancer research and is less than half what it is for Breast, Colon or Pancreas Cancers.
  • The Good News is that progress is being made to treat Prostate Cancer. Mortality rates have dropped in the last 20 years by 30% thanks to advances in Hormone Therapy, Chemotherapy and Biological Therapy. Increased funding for research and patient care will help a multitude of patients live and may perhaps FIND A CURE.

Early detection and situation-dependent treatment is how to maximize the quality of life, minimize treatment side effects and improve longevity.  I know the fight personally because I was first diagnosed at the age of 48 and recently had a recurrence at the age of 53.  Now back in remission, the fight continues to FIND A CURE from this disease for all of us; to preserve life and the quality with which we live it.  To preserve the right to breathe, to stand-up and beat your chest, to cry and laugh, to see your kids get married and your grandchildren be born.  To hope that you can some day hold your newborn grandchild in your arms and smell their soft skin, and to live long enough to take them fishing, shopping, or to a ball game.  The fight against Prostate Cancer is a fight for the right to contribute your own verse and take your sweet time with the editing.  It’s a fight for life and the celebration of living.
